Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS)

Intramuscular Stimulation

When you are experiencing pain characterized by a muscle or muscles that are contracted, one of the most effective treatments physiotherapists use is known as Intramuscular Stimulation or IMS.

What is IMS?

Physiotherapists use ultra-thin acupuncture needles to penetrate the muscle tissue in order to create a stimulus response in the targeted area.

The therapy works in three ways:

  • The stimulus causes a reflex in the contracted muscle, resulting in a relaxation of the muscle tissue.
  • The quick penetration of the needle draws blood to the area, encouraging the natural healing process.
  • The treatment creates an electrical potential in the muscle to make the nerve function normally again.
  • You can expect to commit to a series of IMS treatments coupled with manual therapy and at-home exercises in order to heal your injury and get back to your normal routine.
